Off-season holidays: the art of recharging your batteries

We live in a world that often values being constantly busy, as if productivity were the only measure of success. Yet there is profound wisdom in the art of pausing, of slowing down, of breathing. It’s like adjusting the energies around you, a bit like feng shui.

By the time this article is published, I’ll be in Menorca in the Balearics. As I told you in my podcast episode #41 Getting away from the back-to-school energy, I love going away out of season!

Going on holiday out of season is a bit like opening a window in a room that’s been closed for a long time. The fresh air comes in and your outlook changes. Without the crowds or the noise, you rediscover places in a different, lighter way. These special moments allow you to reconnect with your own rhythm, far removed from the expectations of everyday life.

Feng shui teaches us the importance of balancing yin and yang, activity and rest. Taking time for yourself means rebalancing these forces. When we rush around, we accumulate yang, active energy. But without yin, calm and reflection, we risk exhaustion. Breaks, holidays (and even more so out of season), are the perfect opportunity to re-establish this balance, like a gentle breeze in a house.

An inner journey as important as the physical one

Taking time for yourself is not just for your body, but also for your mind. Every break you give yourself, whether it’s a holiday or a simple moment of relaxation, is an opportunity to take an inner journey. You disconnect from the noise and bustle outside to better reconnect with yourself, with what you really feel. This inner journey is as important, if not more so, than the physical one.

Your home is a reflection of your inner state. Every room, every object that you choose to keep or put forward is an extension of yourself. But sometimes, in the hustle and bustle of everyday life, you no longer perceive the energies that circulate or stagnate there. Just as a cluttered house ends up weighing on our morale, unprocessed thoughts or emotions end up cluttering up our mind. That’s why it’s essential, just as you give yourself a holiday to take a breather, to also take time to clean and rearrange your inner spaces.

Imagine that every moment of rest is like reorganising an interior room: you tidy up, purify and redefine your priorities. By taking a step back, you can see more clearly where your energies are blocked, where you need more clarity or simplicity. These moments of reflection allow you to mentally sort out what is still useful and what is no longer, just as clearing out the clutter in a house allows energy to circulate more freely.

In the same way that you reorganise your home to make it functional and harmonious, this time out gives you the opportunity to reorganise your thoughts, emotions and goals. Feng shui teaches us that for energy to circulate harmoniously in a house, each element must be in its place, and blocked areas of energy must be released. The same applies to our minds. Giving ourselves the mental space to explore and clarify our feelings, aspirations and priorities is just as important as the external order.

This inner journey is therefore an essential part of restoring the balance between your inner life and your physical environment. By taking time for yourself, you’re not just accumulating rest; you’re also strengthening your inner energy, and this will naturally be reflected in your living space.

The return: preparing your space to welcome new energies

When you return home after a well-deserved break, you have the opportunity to take a fresh look at your surroundings. By being away, you’ve probably left some of your day-to-day concerns behind, and this distance often allows you to see more clearly what in your home is no longer working or needs readjusting. You can more easily spot cluttered corners, forgotten objects or layouts that are blocking the flow of energy.

Take advantage of this feedback to assess what’s going wrong: an overcrowded room, objects that no longer make sense to you, or simply an organisation that no longer reflects your current needs. It’s the perfect time to declutter, purify and reorganise. Just as you’ve rejuvenated while you’ve been away, your living space can benefit from a new energy, a breath of fresh air.

You can start by purifying your space with incense, sage and Vivaldi’s 4 Seasons (or a Tibetan bell if you have one!) to clear stagnant energy. Next, take the time to consider whether there are any areas of your home that could benefit from a new layout. Sometimes a simple move of furniture, a change of colour or even the addition of a plant can transform a space. This fresh look at your interior is invaluable: it allows you to readjust the energy flows and make your home an even more pleasant place to live.

Taking a break means preparing to move forward more effectively.

Taking time for yourself is much more than a luxury. It’s a necessity to get the energy flowing better, for you and for your environment. These moments of pause remind you that life doesn’t have to be a frantic race, but a harmonious flow of activity and rest, movement and calm. So, whether you’re heading out of season or simply taking a few moments for yourself during the week, remember that these moments of pause are just as important as the moments of action.
